Rittenhouse Rye pays homage to the classic Pennsylvania rye whiskeys, known for their spicier and fruitier flavor profiles. While it deviates from the traditional high rye mashbill, opting for a lower rye content typical of modern Kentucky ryes, it still maintains its unique character.
This particular expression is a Bottled in Bond (BiB) rye, meeting strict criteria to earn this label. It is the product of a single distillation season and distiller at one distillery, aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years, and bottled at precisely 100 proof. The BiB label also provides clear information about the distillery of origin and the bottling location.
Upon nosing, a delightful blend of fruit and grain greets the senses. Dried bananas and light peaches intertwine with hints of malty grains, reminiscent of a comforting bowl of breakfast oatmeal. Surprisingly, the aroma lacks the expected spiciness.
Moving to the palate, the peaches and dried bananas persist, now harmonizing with white pepper and a touch of spice. However, this rye does not possess the bold, fiery flavor profile commonly associated with modern ryes. Instead, it leans towards a mellower, fruit-forward experience. The mouthfeel strikes a pleasing balance, neither heavy nor light.
The finish reveals notes of leather, lightly charred oak, and subtle peach, accompanied by pepper and a touch of classic rye spice. While there is a pleasant initial heat, it remains restrained, as does the spiciness. Dried fruit and white pepper linger on the back end, though the finish could be longer.
Rittenhouse Rye stands out for its uniqueness, being one of only two mainstream BiB ryes available (the other being E.H. Taylor Straight Rye). However, its true distinction lies in its fruit-forward nature, setting it apart from other nationally distributed ryes. While hints of rye spice attempt to emerge on the palate and finish, few ryes on the market offer such a pronounced fruit presence.
If you seek a bold and spicy rye, Rittenhouse Rye may not meet your expectations. However, for those open to a mellower, fruitier rye experience, this expression is a perfect fit. It also serves as an excellent introduction to ryes for bourbon drinkers venturing into this realm, bridging the gap between the two styles.
Although Rittenhouse Rye starts with a relatively subdued nose, it redeems itself with a more enjoyable palate and finish. The fruit notes blend harmoniously with the gentle pepper and heat, resulting in an effortlessly drinkable rye. Enjoy it neat, straight-up, or in a cocktail for a satisfying experience.
Oh and it has a great Prince themed sticker (When doves rye)
