Starlight ‘Old Rickhouse’ straight rye whiskey
Starlight used a somewhat unconventional
mashbill consisting of 90% rye and 10% malted barley which was distilled in their copper pot still laid it to rest for 4 years in their Rickhouse.
At 113.6 proof, you can tell you are drinking barrel proof but it’s not over hot
Nose: Unmistakably rye. I get some light dill for you old school rye lovers but about equal with other fresh herbs. The floral notes are right there next to the herbs, giving your nose the sensation that you're outdoors in your garden.
Palate: Caramel on the tongue on the first sip followed by some oak and leather. Reminds you of a bourbon at first until the cinnamon, pepper and baking spices shine through. The flavors are quite pronounced and I could easily mistake this for a rye a few years older than what it is
Finish: Upon finishing the sip, it feels cool like fresh mint and menthol. Citrus is present as well as some residual sweetness. The finish has all the right flavors in all the right amounts but wish it was just a little bit longer.
