You’ve got to love a wine that celebrates the founding of a nation by criminals. But back in the late 1700’s, that’s exactly how Australia was born. Seems there were 19 different crimes that could get you transported (via creaky boat) to England’s penal colony. Among them were: bigamy, impersonating an Egyptian (huh?), stealing fish from a pond or river, stealing from furnished lodgings or assaulting, cutting or burning clothes. That last one really gave me pause, considering that I have felt the need to assault a few of the bathing suits I have been trying on recently. But that’s a different matter, and I would gladly accept transport if it included gallons of this red wine blend.
The grapes that make this up are Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. And they do an amazing job of it too. The first thing you notice about the wine is it’s deep, garnet red color. It gives off aromas of new wood, a tiny bit of smoke and even some strawberry. The taste starts out as bright strawberry and sweet cherry jam. It opens up into some fabulous layers: a tinge of oak at the top, the sweet berry in the middle and a kiss of just cut wood at the bottom. This is all finished off with a lingering taste of cocoa powder.
So fruit and cocoa and lovely layers of taste…let’s add in that this wine is velvety and lush in the mouth too. And it’s very well balanced – no hot spots anywhere. Just elegance all around.
